Gallery 38 is pleased to present [ metamorphology -objects and paintings- ], an exhibition of recent works by the German artist Hartmut Landauer.

These new pieces are developments arising from the artwork featured in Landauer’s first exhibition at Gallery 38, which was held in 2019. The artist, who is based in Stuttgart, interprets form as a continual process of revelation, with new shapes revealing themselves out of their prior incarnations.

The centerpiece of the new exhibition, which Landauer has titled wealth, is an installation of more than one hundred everyday objects on a large table. Many of these objects have been altered and manipulated by the artist, turning them into hybridized entities mirroring his belief in the fluidity of boundaries ̶ tiny sculptures made from altered, found fragments; shards and shells; stones and small metal boxes; and indefinable, mysterious “things” ̶ all arranged in precise rows across the large tabletop.

There are also artworks displayed on the walls that interact with the installation in formal and conceptual ways. A series of complex abstract paintings on paper are composed of shimmering, vividly colored stripes that have been built up from countless layers of glaze. These paintings are paired with a series of minimalistic paintings on shaped plywood that take on an almost sculptural character. The two sets of paintings, despite their differences, act as corollaries and correspondences to the objects on the tabletop. The artist has stated that the installation wealth “radiates into the whole exhibition, influencing and relating to each and every little detail, shape, and color found in the other exhibited works,” thereby turning the entire gallery space into an artwork of its own.

Hartmut Landauer’s concept of metamorphology represents the eternal possibilities of observation, accretion, and above all, creation of objects in a state of constant change and endless transformation. For him, metamorphology embodies the immeasurable wealth of imagination that is capable of creating everything out of nothing.
